(22/05/11) LEAGUE AND PLAY-OFF CHAMPIONS!!

Monumental is the only way to describe what Ibiza Club de Rugby achieved in Alicante over the weekend. It was the culmination of a huge effort by many people which saw them take the spoils of victory against a valiant and noble opposition, Club de Rugby Alicante University despite the pundits who had Ibiza as the under-dog and Alicante as firm favourties. After closing out their semi-final against XV Murcia Rugby with a home win 66-3 and an away victory 0-39 this two leg (home and away) final was seen by many observers of the game as a formaility for Alicante to win, principally due to the fact that competition on the mainland is greater and therefor standards are higher. It was also incorrectly assumed that "soldiers of fortune" or mercenaries would not prosper against a united army. The website of Alicante quoted Suetonius stating, "The story says that wars are always won by a more united army and soldiers of fortune have never been able to break the hearts of those who fight for what is theirs. His shield, flag, country or for the honor of belonging to something, even a polyester orange shirt. An identity. A sense of being part of something and someone. A whole." For this reason the victory tasted even sweeter.
It was an emphatic victory in the end winning at home by 51-8 and another resounding 7-45 away win in Alicante on a Saturday evening. It was a steamy cauldron, the late afternoon sun had cooked the plastic astro surface all day and the black rubber, micro anti-friction balls felt hotter than Alonso's tire's at the Malaysian Grand Prix. A large crowd of university students added to the intensity and brought a sense of the big occasion to arena; it felt gladatorial and Suetonius's Ceasar would no doubt have reveled at the mouth watering prospect of a bloody contest. Ibiza settled their nerves with an early try after five minutes, a penalty being awarded for hands in the ruck, taken by Chad Reay quicker than you could say, "Sticky Vicky" and bludgeoned his way over from 8 meters. It was followed by another penalty duly converted by Sebas Santa Maria sweetly dissecting the up rights from 32 meters. Ibiza looked threatening, taking the game to their opponents in all areas of the field and then against the run of play Alicante were in turn awrded a penalty 15 meters from the Ibiza line and their barreling, rotund number eight built a head of steam akin to a spring loaded leprechaun, fizzed up on Red Bull and caffeine. It cost Ibiza 7 points but was the only time they crossed the ibiza line. Ibiza showed their metal and dug deep, tightened their defense and countered with another try from Joe Murray taking them in to half time with 7 -17 point lead.
The coaches Uru and Baraugh (happy and Grumpy) worked their magic at half time focusing the team on key areas of the game and re-adjusting their strategy deal with Alicante's weapons and credit to the players they implemented the plan and started to cruise 12mins into the second half with another try. Rynno "Spoons" Harvey worked over his opposite number with Sebas Sola and Chad Reay in the front row despite the lack of purchase from the astro-turf. Valentine Venteo and Ile "The Stripper" Vacar provided a strong engine in the scrum with Bruce "Where's The Window" Jones, Vasquez and Sanz dictating the contact area.
By now Ibiza were finding a different gear with Charlie Lamb in control behind his forwards he directed and navigated them round the field and squeezed every last note out of them as exquisitely as Zubin Mehta with the Isreal Philharmonic. Not only did he control the forwards he zipped out passes sharper than a global knife which cut the defense pieces and opened up the spaces for Joe Murray to exploit and he obliged with two exceptional tries. It was no surprise Charlie Lamb took man of the match for eight minutes he worked and selflessly brought others into the game, bossed the forwards and asked questions of the Alicante defense. An awesome contribution.
It is hard to find criticism with this performance and without doubt every man gave his utmost for the team. There was always a danger new fresh blood in a team could create a split,in fact the opposite resulted new blood created a greater sense of team. A new set of bonds were established quickly through the skills the newer players brought. In fact they no longer feel like new players it feels like they have always been here so quickly did they ease into and become a part of the Ibiza club family. There were some terrific individual moments but there is no doubt this victory owes everything to a combined squad effort., to those supporting players like Miroslav, Dury who never got to wear the shirt on Saturday but turned up to help the team, to the subs (Dan, Geoghe, Diego, Pablo, Juanjo, Andreas and Oscar) who patiently waited for their chance to play and lifted the spirits when the starting fifteen were flagging in the heat of the pitch, to the Doctor Carlos and the physio Ali who patched the wounded a before during and after the battle and and the coaches Happy and Grumpy who have put so much the preparing this team. There are also those who played in the past and turned out in wet training sessions in Decemeber or travelled away when their were not enough players to make a full team. It has been a long journey and Ibiza club thank all who have played a role past and present to get to the National League for Ibiza Club de Rugby. Not only are Ibiza CR the only team from all the sports clubs in Ibiza to be in the National League but they have achieved it in style. Played four "play off" games won four play of games. Amassed 200 points for and conceded only 18 points along the way, averaging 50 points a game for and giving away around four points a game. Monumental.
In summary the president Mauricio Paez needs credit for his vision and having the courage to put Ibiza Club de Rugby on the map and all those who contributed to combine as a team to bring home such a prestigeous trophy, truly monumental and congratulations to all. Thanks also must be extended to all our sponsors Space, Ibiza Sports Tours, The Ibiza Sun, The Highlander (what a party) and Playa Bella Apartments, your continued support has been a significant part of this wonderful achievement.

(15/05/11) FIRST STEP, BEWARE OF THE STATISTICS!

Ibiza Club de Rugby played the first leg [of the final game] of their quest to gain promotion to the National League on Saturday evening at can Misses and walked away with a resounding 51 - 3 victory. They carry this handsome lead into the second and final leg away to Alicante next week. Last week the University of Alicante Rugby team website quoted from the works of Suetonius, "So Suetonius and Julio Cesar hypothesized about the quality of the fate that might come with the impending war against Optimates and Pompey, and said as calmly crossed the Rubicon, the narrow strip of water that separated Gaul from Italy in time". It goes on to say, "The story says that wars are always won more by a united army and soldiers of fortune have never been able to break the hearts of those who fight for what is theirs. His shield, flag, country or for the honor of belonging to something, even a polyester orange shirt. I am by no means a learned scholar of classics and do not wish to contradict this articulate "Churchillian" call to arms for the players of Alicante, I do however humbly offer another perspective to this reference of a fine historian, Suetonius. Gauis Suetonius Tranquillus (circa AD 70 -AD 130) wrote De Vita Caesarum Twelve Ceasars and dedicated the book to a friend Gauis Septicus Clarus a prefect of the Preatorian Guard. The Preatorian Guard were used by Roman Emperors as personal bodyguards and comprised roman citizens, Basques, Germans and other soldiers. They were an elite force and selected for their ability to bring new skills to the unit, raise the standard from outside influences as well as an ability to work as a team.

Enough history for now. For the players this must have felt like a battle of epic proportions having glided through the first stages and been drawn at home against the favourites Alicante. In was a nervy start for both teams and Ibiza could quite easily have been 9 pts down in the first five minutes as the referee awarded 4 consecutive penalties to Alicante, 3 within kicking distance. Alicante's kicker missed all three and did not settle his teams early nerves. The electric Juan Otero (acting Captain) settled Ibiza's nerves putting the first points on the board for Ibiza, linking with centers Shepherd and Murray to find space on the right wing and score a magnificent try converted by Santa Maria. The penalty count was high against Ibiza but a few minutes later when the referee interpreted a ruck offence in favour of Ibiza and Santa Maria slotted home a safe three points with ease.

This settled the home side and their powerful front row had started to go to work on the Alicante's pack, Sebas Sola, Chad Reay and Rhino Harvey took four against the head in the first quarter of the game and applied their dark art of front row pressure. Another penalty for Alicante and 10 -3 reversed the pressure and asked questions of the home side. They responded admirably with more scrummage dominance and a platform to release their pacey three quarters. Successive tries took them to half time with a 24-3 lead.

A hard working and industrious back row Vazquez, Jones and Sanz started to fire together and provide ball for Charlie "Rooney" Lamb the scrum half. Lamb sniped, probed and harried round the base of the scrum and the contact area keeping the Alicante defense honest, once they were drawn in to defend his terrier like strikes he zipped out sharp, accurate passes to his number ten partner who in turn supplied the mid field. It was potent and effective and every time they received ball they broke the gain line or scored. Man of the match Joe "The Kiss" Murray scored two exceptional tries and ably assisted in Captain Otero's hat trick! The back line flourished from Lamb's quick service releasing Shepherd who fleeced the defense and crossed for two tries. The only hiccup came with fifteen minutes to go when another series of penalties and two yellow cards saw Alicante cross for an unconverted try and a final score Ibiza 51- 3 Alicante.

As a lover of statistical data and evidence the facts are overwhelmingly clear; Ibiza have played two semi-final games and the first leg of their final, played 3 Won 3, points for 167, points against 11 and have had there defensive lined breached only once. For 25% of saturday's game the played with 14 men and still won by a significant margin. A word of caution with statistics they often hide a narrative, imperative to understanding the limitations of the data. It is a statistical fact 100% of non-smokers die and this fact rains on the parade of evangelical non smokers all 100% of whom, will d also die. It fails to tell you though what kind of death you can expect if you die from smoking; heart disease, diabetes, lung cancer or emphysema and your increased chances of a slow painful death. Ibiza must take care not to get carried away with their first leg victory, or the stats. It does not tell you the dangers of a wounded animal, the players Alicante could not travel to Ibiza with, Ibiza's squad available to travel away, the Astro-turf pitch and the old Chinese proverb..... "never pick a fight with man who have nothing to loose". If they do not heed these words Alicante could urinate on Ibiza's chips.

Our, "soldiers of fortune" and "Preatorian Guard" have brought new skills, raised an already high standard even higher and worked as an effective team unit amongst Ibicencos, Catalans, Espanols, Argentinians, Romanians, French, Irish, Uruguayans, Welsh, English, Italians, Venezuelans and Croatians (sorry if I missed any). Rugby has brought all these nations together and added a sprinkling of Australians, New Zealanders, another Argentinian, some more Englishmen and fine player from Spain. All of them love rugby, all of them go to make up one united team Ibiza. Ibiza has welcomed everyone who passed through here for the last 4,000 years and this is part of Ibiza's unique charm. We welcome and salute all of you! We welcome and salute all those who turned out to watch a crowd of spectators made from many communities and formed into one community, Ibiza! Thanks also to all our sponsors Space, The Ibiza Sun, Playa Bella Apartments, Ibiza Sports Tours, The Highlander we could not have made this journey without you and we are proud to be in partnership with you all.

(01/05/11) IBIZA SHOW NO MERCY FOR MURCIA

The art of parenting is as easy as pulling your top lip over the back of your head whilst plate spinning on a pogo stick; a painful, continual struggle to prevent the plates [children] falling and yet hugely rewarding when it all goes to plan.

I have long been a critic of Ibiza Club de Rugby when they fail to play the game as it should be played, enterprising, free flowing and combative, thinking mans three dimensional high speed chess. Not too much to ask there then! Essentially your goal as a trainer or coach is to get 15 individuals thinking and playing in harmonious unity and this has proved an elusive goal with promising glimpses fading before they have fully flowered. Not so on Saturday night at Can Misses when they took on the might of Murcia and crushed them in a thrilling 67– 6 win.

As a harsh and often severe critic there was much to celebrate and exult with nothing to lament. It was by far the best (and most complete) team performance I have seen as a commentator, in every department and what a time to pull it out of the bag. What an emphatic statement they made in the first round of the play offs against [XV Murcia] who have twice beaten (this season) Cartegena last seasons victors in the play offs against Ibiza.

From the first whistle Ibiza CR played with real intensity and the ferocity with which Ryan Harvey launched himself into the first ruck made a rampaging heard of Wildebeest look tame by comparison. Ibiza did not let their opponents settle and “Rhino” Harvey had set the tone in the first minute. They harried and hustled and scavenged for every morsel of possession pushing Murcia backwards in every contact. It soon lead to pressure upon Murcia’s line and a couple of early penalties beautifully converted by Sebas Santa Maria.

A couple of “catch and drives” from accurate lineout work, made good ground for Ibiza’s opponents and threatened as a potent attacking weapon. Ibiza quickly worked out the puzzle and repelled the threat with interest. At 6 – 0 with 15 minutes of the game gone and a fly half whose tactical kicking pinned Ibiza back deep in their own half on several occasions made for a few nervy moments for the crowd. Once again Ibiza dealt with the pressure and returned the ball up-field through quick hands not just with interest but compound growth for good measure. Ibiza began to take hold of the game with forwards growling and snarling like a hungry pack of hyenas and backs busily buzzing and fizzing with ball in hand. Valentine Venteo, playing in the second row, was outstanding in contact and he grappled in the mauls, tackled around the fringes refusing to take a backward step all evening. He proved an essential link with the back row, Captain Nacho Sparrano indomitable, spirited; Dan “Beiber” Andrews, Dervish-like and deceptively dogged behind those Doe “Bambi” looks. But man of the match Aron Sanz was exceptional. He ran straight, broke tackles, offloaded, snapped up every loose ball on the field of play and executed all the basics with ruthless efficiency.

By half time Ibiza were 25 – 3 in the lead and starting fire even more precisely with each passing moment. Just before half time they lost captain Sparano to the bin for 10 minutes following a series of hands in the ruck by Bambi Beiber Dan. This like phlogiston served to ignite an incandescent resolve to dig even deeper. Alex Berisso served quick clean ball to his fly half who began to release his three quarters and unleash their pace and power. Paul Shephard cut a line sharp enough to splice diamonds, bounced three defenders and burst through to score. Otero joined the line created overlaps outside, used the spare men to advantage and romped inside for three tries and unselfishly gave a pass for his winger to score.

Unselfish is the key word and every player to a man played for the team. Despite some brilliant efforts from several individuals team unity was Ibiza’s most potent weapon and their combined effort was far greater than the sum of all the parts, flying in the face of the Ringleman effect! Ibiza squeezed Murcia in every area of the game and when Sebastian Sola Saca and Chad Reay joined Rhino in the front row they squeezed so hard Murcia’s front row popped up like a Jack-in-a box and their tight head looked for all the world like “Biggles Goes Flying”.

Highly critical analysis would suggest the line out needs more consistency and using powerhouse centre Paul Shepherd more often will pay even greater dividends, but that would be trite in the face such a victory so I pull back from my temptation.

Raising children is rewarding when you get it right. Getting all the plates to spin only to realise the first three have fallen is a painful, frustrating struggle. If a coaches goal is to get 15 individuals thinking and playing in harmonious unity he will also experience set backs when plates come crashing to the ground just as he thinks he is almost there. Last Saturday Coach Alexis Carbia and his team jumped and fizzed around on pogo sticks like spring loaded hobgoblins with all the plates spinning for a full eighty minutes. Final score Ibiza 67 – 6 XV Murcia. Not only can they take a bow, they can take a 61 point advantage to Murcia next week for the second leg of this play off.

Thank you once again to the generous sponsorship of Space, The Ibiza Sun, Playa Belle Hotel, Ibiza Sports Tours, Highlander and of course the local town hall. Your sponsorship has helped to provide a significant contribution to the rugby playing community of Ibiza achieving National status. Thank you also to all who gave their noisy support it was awesome!

(25/04/11) THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT FOR SWANSEA UPLANDS

Competition drives standards and improves performance. Swansea Uplands brought a high competitive edge to the island with their two touring sides at U19 and U20 level. Ibiza CR U19, have enjoyed a very successful season but experienced another level of play they seldom meet in the Balearic League. Despite having more than forty points against them the youngsters of Ibiza will take away a lot from this game and recognise a well drilled and enterprising adversary from Swansea. Consistency is a key factor in high performance in all sports, rugby is no exception and Swansea’s performance provided a significant benchmark in consistency. Ibiza had all the tools and all the skills applying them more consistently and choosing the right option at the right time should be their focus next season.

Meanwhile a wet Semana Santa Sunday provided no shortage of heat on the field of play in Can Misses. The egregious nature of tour rugby brings a different set of tensions to the game and Swansea U20 vs. Ibiza senior XV was no exception. Spirits are always high on tour and players create a bond only ever experienced in those conditions. I use the word “spirits” advisedly and with all its connotations. And thereby lays the core of all that can be both good and bad in touring rugby.

‘Esprit de cor’, when nurtured on tour, engenders a togetherness and unity beyond normal limits. The consumption of alcoholic spirits beyond normal limits has the potential to cloud good judgement. I write not from my pulpit but from experience and therefore do not wish to cast the first stone. Guilty as charged Ma Lud! From my observations the outcome can often mean the first 15 minutes of the game is feisty, intense and sometimes a little petulant. Sundays game was all of these and brought an edginess Ibiza needed as they move in to the “play offs” next Saturday.

Swansea’s U20’s represented a mixture of players from 18 to 24 all of whom had played a lot more rugby than the majority of the Ibiza team. That said there is always a fascinating contest between well tenured teams and fledglings ready to fly; mature strength and savvy vs. pace, natural fitness and no fear of failure.

The first 15 minutes of jousting was frenetic and did not make for a tidy game. It did however prove to be fiery, full of commitment and full on from the off. It was full of errors and the exuberance of youth pushed the limits too far too often. Swansea’s eagerness was so close to the edge in every area of the game they transgressed in rucks and crept beyond the offside line too often. It resulted in Swansea’s blindside flanker spending 10 mins in the bin towards the end of the first half.

Ibiza tested the direct routes fearing pace outside would be too much for them to handle. Their first try came from a series of driving mauls and a drive from 8 meters. At this point in the contest the physical game of Ibiza’s forwards was wearing down their opponents defences. They crossed a few minutes later in a similar fashion but Swansea held them up and cleared their lines from the ensuing series of scrums. It lifted the Swansea boys and they attacked from wider spaces they found in broken play and poor kicking from Ibiza. It provided a platform for them to pressure Ibiza’s line and a penalty on the 5 meter line saw Swansea execute a planned penalty move to perfection; straight from the training ground, delivered with deceptive ease. They grew in confidence and took the game to Ibiza scoring another try converted to make the score 5 -12 in Swansea’s favour.

The greasy conditions made handling difficult and there was no doubt the boys from Swansea were far more used to dealing with them than ‘Los Chicos’ from a small island in the med! Some early communication issues between Martin Gschedler and newly arrived Paul Shepherd on his debut lead to three dropped balls. What was encouraging was the potential relationship, with a tiny bit more precision there was space for Paul to exploit. As the game progressed Paul and Martin started to gain a greater understanding leading to an outstanding individual effort by Paul Shepherd when he broke three tackles and the attention of the defence to touch down on the wide left side. Ibiza battled and fought and their discipline was excellent around the contact area and they resisted the temptation to argue with the referee, Swansea did not and in the end it cost them the game. This lesson is critical for the play offs where poor discipline will be punished by good teams.

Ibiza;s new flanker, Dan Andrews grew into the game and once again plied his trade with great skill grinding away on the “inside” like a prize-fighter over the last 6 rounds. He tackled, broke down play and frustrated Swansea forward attacking drives. With Valentin Venteo, Sebas Sola Saca and Ryan Harvey in close support. In the dying minutes Ibiza took a series of penalties and pressured the Swansea line with a catch and drive at the line out. The pack gathered momentum and powered their way over the line to secure the win Ibiza15-12 Swansea.

Thanks must go Swansea for a great weekend of rugby equalled only by their ability to party after the game. Special thanks to Ibiza Club de Rugby’s sponsors, Space, the authorities from the Ayuntamiento of Ibiza and the very generous injection of support from the Ibiza Sun and Playa Bella Beach Hotel who have given every opportunity for Ibiza CR to compete in the play off games for promotion to the National League. Thank you, without your help we would not be in this enviable position. Do not miss the first play off game on Saturday 29th April in Can Misses at 2000hrs, come and support your team.

(20/04/11) THE UNDER 18s TOO TOUGH FOR PONENT R.C

What a feast of colour the islands blossom brings to our eyes in the early months of the year. If you were in Can Misses on Saturday last you will have been treated to a colourful feast of rugby by the islands youngsters as they faced Ponent CR from Mallorca. The style of play the under 18 team are developing is a credit to all the players and those who are involved in training and coaching them. They have good organisational structure in their play, pace and power. They also have one or two risings stars who have great potential for the future. Added to a great work ethic and a willingness to learn these blossoming youngsters provided a veritable feast fit for any field of play. Ibiza took the lead within 3 minutes through a well work try from the back of a scrum with Captain Lucas Casariego breaking from 18 meters and untouched by the defensive cover, he failed to convert his try with a narrowly missed kick. In the 5th minute Gianfranco Terzzoli found space out wide, resulting from some effective work from the forwards around the contact area, with plenty of work to do he was impressive with both his pace and balance to beat several defenders before touching down. Terzzoli was hungry for ball all afternoon and went on to score another beautiful try ten minutes later under the posts converted by Captain Casariego.
Discipline in and around the tackle was good with some highly effective rucking creating turnover ball on many occasions for the Ibiza pack. The backs used the ball well and moved it through the hands to create space for the back three to work. It was great to see both backs and forwards working effectively together constantly probing for holes in their opponents defence. This was mixed with great individual enterprise from Omar Khakhour, and Jack Walker who cut the defence to shreds with pacey runs from within their own half. If there is any criticism to be expressed it came from one or two handling errors after several phases of play when passes went astray or a failure to get the support there quick enough when decisive breaks were made. On one such occasion Kharkhour broke from his 22, breaking the tackles of three defenders and finding himself with acres of space in the midfield, he looked for his back up saw there was non and pinned back his ears to sprint round the full back and score a magnificent try. For a second row forward he is remarkably mobile and has pace to burn. He broke again in similar style, only to be tackled by Ponents exceptionally fast winger who put in a magnificent try saving tackle. Sadly the tackle left Omar unconscious for a few short seconds after losing the clash with his head to the floor. We wish him well and hope he recovers quickly. In the meantime thanks must go to the expert medical help on hand in dealing with the incident immediately.

Having said support was lacking when the break away came it would be fair to acknowledge John Steyn and Danny Langley, whose industry and support play was exceptional. Both did the hard yards as well as the tidying up of the scrappy stuff that no one notices but is essential to any flourishing and successful side….the name Richard Hill comes to mind as an example! Indeed in my opinion Danny Langley was my man of the match he threw into the lineout with great accuracy, he hooked and scrummaged well and was still mobile around the pitch - a fabulous performance.

On the thirty minute mark Ponent struck back with a try carved out of a refusal to submit to the relentless pressure Ibiza created. It was a credit to them as a team they never let their heads drop, even after a burgeoning try by Oscar Diaz in dying moments of the first half. Indeed it seemed to stiffen their resolve and they came out for the second half with even more determination. New recruit Juan scored after the opening score of the second half from Casariego whose kicking had improved as the game went on but failed to convert his own second try. Shortly afterwards a well worked set piece from a line out to the front of the line saw Jaime Safar crash over in the corner for a brilliant try. His brother Mark Safar also carried all afternoon making ground and presenting quick and tidy ball for his scrum half.

It was a wonderful performance by the whole team and it is good to see this team flourish with the fruits of all their hard labours on display for all to see. It is plain to see they train hard together and are building the foundations of a very successful future for rugby in Ibiza.
